Overview
Inspired by the city of Venice, the paintings in Chamber draw from interior details found in Venetian cafes, hotels and workshops – spaces catering to the swells of visitors to and from the famous city on the water. The series evolved out of earlier works inspired by junk shops, where the flotsam of ordinary lives is collected in temporary displays, waiting to be rehomed. The Chamber paintings similarly feature an excess of objects and decorative elements that reflect an abiding interest in the Baroque. Ornately carved mirrors, chairs with curved legs, and swags of thick red fabric come together in domestic arrangements awaiting activation by the next influx of visitors.
