Anna Freeman Bentley’s practice explores constructed environments as stages for changing purposes and human behaviours. In her expressive paintings, vacated rooms and highly elaborate interiors communicate longing in different ways – whether the subject is a highly composed film set or a junkshop teeming with neglected objects. Alive to the psychological nuances of decor and desire, the works communicate the needs and aspirations of absent or intended individuals, inviting emotive, psychological and semiotic readings of space. These are paintings which pay special attention to the arrangement of items in a house museum or the accumulation of books in a private member’s club. Mirrors and other reflective surfaces feature frequently, unsettling surfaces and hinting at narratives just beyond view.
Often touching on themes of gentrification, exclusivity, and performativity, the work examines how spaces are shaped by function, access and time. In their luminous evocations, the paintings probe what spaces mean, how they’re used, and what they reveal about human presence, even when no figures appear. An empty room in Freeman Bentley’s world is never neutral, but rather a palimpsest containing layers of meaning and associations. As such, the work explores the transience of spaces – environments charged with the sense of recent activity even as they are poised for further activation.
Anna Freeman Bentley (b. 1982, London, UK) received her BA from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2004, her MA from the Royal College of Art in London in 2010 and a certificate of higher education in Art History from Birkbeck in 2025. In 2019 she participated in the artist residency at Palazzo Monti, Brescia and in 2012 she was awarded the Artist in Restaurant residency at Michelin-starred restaurant Pied à Terre in London. Her work was included in the Prague Biennale 5 2011 and Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2009.
