The Studio

Artists’ studios have always been more than a place of work. They are a theatre of the self, a space where the act of looking turns inward, where the world is examined and reimagined. This series explores the studio as a living subject, a space of endless possibilities as well as of uncertainty. Inspired by Pablo Picasso’s 1956 painting L’atelier, this body of work consists of paintings of the artist’s studio, and of the studios of fellow painters, all women. The works ask quietly but insistently what it has meant, and continues to mean, to claim this space as an artist. Exhibited alongside depictions of workspaces by artists including Georges Braque, Giorgio de Chirico, and Henri Matisse, the paintings in this series explore the studio as a stage for the creative act, thereby becoming portraits of their occupants as much as paintings of interiors. This series of work was exhibited at Nahmad Projects in London in 2026.
