Members Clubs

Executed in 2017, the paintings in this series explore the esoteric interiors of private members clubs in central London. Conforming to the historic notion of the gentleman’s club as a “home from home,” the interiors pictured in these works have been staged to look like idealised living spaces, decorated with idiosyncratic objects and books unlikely to be read. These are spaces arranged in anticipation of their guests: cosy nooks designed for meetings and assignations; armchairs gathered in relaxed living-rooms; tables set for dinner under ambient lighting. In several, the picture plane is disrupted by lines bisecting objects a degree or two, evoking the slight but recognisable shift in atmosphere which occurs when members occupy these rooms. Works from Members Clubs have been included in group exhibitions at Space K, Gwacheon and 68 Projects in Berlin.
