Composed

Exhibited alongside the works in Collected, those in Composed explore the precise mise-en-scenes of a museum display, in this case carefully staged tableaux of interiors in an exhibition devoted to home design. As in a showroom, these interiors are both discrete and illustrative; but, because they are in a museum, are roped off from human interaction, only to be observed. Like scenes from a film, they are circumscribed by what the director (here, the curator) wants us to see: a bed with the cover pulled back, awaiting an imaginary occupant; a painted screen separating a presumed living space from a sleeping area. Like the worlds in Collected, those of Composed are idealised and temporary, to be dismantled and rearranged in a different display or moved to storage at show’s end. This series was exhibited at Frestonian Gallery in London in 2020.
