make shift

This series explores the adapted interior spaces around a film location in Saudi Arabia. Here, a bedroom is temporarily repurposed to function as a costume department, a bathroom as a wardrobe and changing room. These are spaces where actors step into character, but they are empty of people. Instead, the paintings are animated by a sense of recent occupation, signified by items including a motionless fan, a discarded script, bags of fabric and props lying on the floor. Such activity appears in contrast to the eclectic decor of the film location, a historic house museum selected to stand in for the director’s childhood home. Confluences between the filmmaker’s biography and that of the artist bring a further charge to the works. By presenting images of rooms affected by the crew, rather than images of the set itself,  the works consider how interiors can be dressed and made flexible to perform certain roles. In 2024, works in this series were exhibited at Monica de Cardenas, Zuoz.
