Reflections

Reflections explores long-standing themes of plurality, self-perception and artifice. Although the chosen subjects of Freeman Bentley’s works  are often referred to as ‘domestic interiors,’ the worlds that are articulated are in fact ones of illusion and refraction. This collection brings together a selection of works on paper from the Complete Reality series as well as paintings of floral arrangements at Kettle’s Yard, the house museum in Cambridge originally created by art collectors Jim and Helen Ede to house themselves alongside their collection. Reflections in mirrors, or light filtered through windows and water in a vase, refract the picture plane, offering new ways to view the environments depicted. In 2026 works in this series have been included in exhibitions at Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, and Canopy Collections, London.
